Now what made Darkfalls gameplay unique is not the engine it was based on, but the GAMELOGIC that was written that drove the engine to DISPLAY what you saw on screen. The 3D engine of any game engine DOES NOT dictate the type of graphic styles that are allowed, only the limits of how realistic the graphics it can support. The Physics engine of any game engine DOES NOT dictate the type of physics that are allowed (aim based vs point-n-click combat vs what tf ever), only the limits of how realistic the physics it can support. They also wrote their own shitty out of date (by years) 3D engine, Particles engine and Physics engine. Unreal Engine 4 does not contain this and you will need to build it out yourself. The only thing unique about DFs engine is that it contains a network engine that can support a large amount of players on a server. Wow I see the regular dickheads around here still talk like they what they're talking about. And for God sake do not mention SpatialOS - shit like that is purely trap-ware, and to date no game properly launched with it. Has the market caught up to it in regards to MMORPG tech? Nope, you're still going to have to come up with your own tech do handle something as complex as an MMORPG on an engine like Unreal or Unity. Is the engine losing value over time? Absolutely. (Example: The vast majority of DF/UW art assets did not employ LOD). I happen to do a lot of what you can consider "technical art" in various projects, I know quite a bit about optimizing games, enough to guarantee you even without looking at the internals of the game that plenty of room for improvements exists. UW's performance is a legitimate issue but not one unsolvable.

You will not find such features out-of-the-box elsewhere, and developing such features will cost you a lot of resources. It is a fully fledged MMORPG engine with aim based combat. UW/DF's engine is still fairly unique if you look at the total package.

You're looking at both royalties as well as extended costs for maintaining services capable of working with these engines.
